Barcelona El Prat (BCN) is one of Europe's most competitive short-haul markets, with Vueling, Ryanair, and easyJet all operating large bases there. That competition keeps fares to Western Europe consistently sharp, particularly outside peak summer months. For travellers with flexible plans, Girona Airport (GRO) — roughly 90 km north and primarily used by Ryanair — occasionally offers lower-cost alternatives on selected routes.
Barcelona El Prat has two terminal buildings. Terminal 1 is the hub for Vueling, Iberia, most Star Alliance carriers, and larger full-service airlines. Terminal 2 (with concourses A, B, and C) primarily handles low-cost airlines. The two terminals are not connected airside and require either a free inter-terminal shuttle bus (around 10 minutes) or the metro to move between them.
Metro Line L9 Sud has dedicated stations inside both T1 and T2, but the line does not connect directly to central hubs such as Sants or Plaça de Catalunya - a transfer to another metro line is needed at Zona Universitaria or Collblanc, making the total journey to the centre around 45-55 minutes. The Renfe R2 Nord commuter train serves T2 directly (around 25 minutes to Sants and Passeig de Gràcia); passengers flying from T1 use the free shuttle to T2 first. The Aerobus coach runs from both terminals to Plaça de Catalunya in around 35-40 minutes without a transfer. A new direct rail connection (R-Aeroport) linking both terminals to central Barcelona is currently in testing and expected to open in 2027.
T1 is the larger terminal with longer walk times from security to remote gates. T2 is divided into three concourses (A, B, C) - if flying a low-cost carrier, confirm your concourse on your boarding pass as they are separate sub-sections within T2. Always check your terminal on your booking confirmation before travelling.
