Athens International Airport (ATH) is Greece's main aviation gateway and the primary hub for Aegean Airlines, with a wide range of European short-haul routes alongside connections to the Middle East and beyond. Low-cost carriers including Ryanair and easyJet have expanded their Athens presence significantly in recent years, increasing competition and keeping fares to Western Europe more accessible. Before you fly
Athens Eleftherios Venizelos operates as a single integrated terminal. Schengen flights (most European destinations) depart from the A gates; non-Schengen flights including those to the UK, US, and most non-EU countries use the B gates. If you are connecting from a Schengen arrival to a non-Schengen departure, or the reverse, allow extra time for the passport control crossing between zones.
Getting to the airport
Metro Line 3 (Blue Line) runs directly between the airport and central Athens (Syntagma Square) in around 40 minutes, with trains running approximately every 30 minutes. Note that the airport section requires a higher-fare airport ticket rather than a standard city transit ticket. Express bus X95 also connects to Syntagma and runs around the clock, including overnight when the metro does not operate.
Terminal tips
Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air are the primary carriers for most European and domestic routes and operate out of the main terminal. During peak summer months, check-in queues for popular domestic and island-hopper routes can build significantly. Allow extra time regardless of your airline if departing in July or August.
