Often overlooked in favour of Barcelona or Madrid, Valencia offers a different experience: a working Mediterranean city with one of Spain's finest historic centres, a year-round food culture built around the Mercado Central, and the Turia River park - 9 km of green space running through the middle of the city on the bed of a diverted river. The City of Arts and Sciences complex and the Albufera wetlands 10 km south add further range for a 3-4 day visit. Valencia Airport (VLC) handles the main Western European corridors - London, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt - through Ryanair, Vueling, and easyJet, with consistent competition among carriers that keeps fares relatively stable. The airport is 8 km west of the centre, connected by metro in around 20 minutes. Prices are most competitive November through February; the Fallas festival in the third week of March is the main spike period and requires booking several months in advance.
