Istanbul Airport (IST) is the home base for Turkish Airlines and one of the most connected airports in the world, with direct routes to over 120 countries. Its strategic position between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia means Istanbul is both a worthwhile destination in its own right and a strong transfer hub for long-haul itineraries. Travellers departing Istanbul should also compare fares from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side of the city — budget carriers including Pegasus use it as their primary base and prices for European short-haul can be lower.
Istanbul Airport (IST) operates from a single very large terminal building and replaced Ataturk Airport as the city's main international hub. Turkish Airlines and its Star Alliance partners are by far the dominant presence. Most international carriers and connecting traffic also operate from the same terminal. Istanbul is one of the world's busiest transfer hubs, connecting Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
Metro line M11 connects the airport to Gayrettepe (on the M2 line) in around 30 minutes, from where passengers can continue to central areas including Taksim. The metro operates between approximately 06:00 and midnight - it does not run overnight, which matters for early morning or late night flights. Havaist airport coaches serve multiple areas of the city and run around the clock, with journey times that vary with Istanbul traffic.
Istanbul Airport is very large by floor area, and walking times from check-in to remote gates can be substantial on busy travel days. Allow extra time if you are unfamiliar with the terminal layout. Transfer passengers connecting via Turkish Airlines should check whether their itinerary involves a domestic-to-international connection, which requires moving between the domestic and international zones of the same terminal building.
