Tokyo is served by two international airports: Haneda (HND), 14 km from central Tokyo, and Narita (NRT), 60 km northeast of the city. Haneda handles a growing international schedule and is better for city access; Narita handles the bulk of long-haul volume and is the hub for budget Asian carriers like Peach and Jetstar. Japan Airlines and ANA operate from both. For European arrivals, Narita is more commonly the arrival airport on direct or one-stop itineraries from Europe. Cherry blossom season (late March to early April) and autumn foliage (October-November) are Japan's two peak travel windows, and fares into Tokyo reflect this — expect to pay 25-40% more than off-peak if your dates fall within those windows. Booking 3-4 months ahead for those periods is advisable; travelling in June-July or January-February gives the most available capacity at lower prices. Shinkansen access from both airports makes Kyoto (2h15), Osaka (2h30), and Kamakura (1h) practical extensions to a Tokyo base.
