Palermo has been getting more attention as a city break destination beyond the standard beach-focused Sicily circuit. The Arab-Norman architecture - a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble spanning the Palatine Chapel, the cathedral, and several Norman churches - is genuinely unlike anything in mainland Italy, and the Ballarò street market and Vucciria neighbourhood give the city a distinct, slightly chaotic energy. Palermo Falcone-Borsellino Airport (PMO) handles Italian domestic routes to Rome, Milan, and Bologna with high frequency, alongside Western European connections through Ryanair, Vueling, and Wizz Air to London, Brussels, Frankfurt, and Barcelona. Factor in the transfer: the airport is 35 km northwest of the city centre, around 45-50 minutes by bus or taxi. October, November, and March are the best months to visit - comfortable temperatures, lower prices from Northern European cities, and significantly fewer tourists than the July-August peak.
