Marseille offers a different experience from Paris and the French Riviera - France's main working port city, with a rough edge that most visitors find more interesting than the polished resort towns to the east. The Vieux-Port, the MuCEM museum at the entrance to the old harbour, the Frioul archipelago 15 minutes by ferry, and the Calanques National Park immediately south of the city make it practical for a combination of city, sea, and coastline in a single trip. Aix-en-Provence is 30 minutes away and Avignon about 70. Marseille Provence Airport (MRS) handles the main European corridors through Ryanair, easyJet, and Transavia, with Air France and Lufthansa connecting via Paris CDG and Frankfurt. The airport is 27 km northwest of the city centre, with a shuttle bus taking around 25 minutes. Fares are competitive year-round on budget carriers; May, June, and September offer the best combination of price and weather for visitors primarily interested in the Calanques.
