About Lisbon

Lisbon is built across seven hills above the Tagus estuary, giving the city a vertical quality — trams climbing steep cobbled lanes, panoramic miradouros (viewpoints) at the top of each hill, and the wide river visible from almost everywhere. The historic quarters of Alfama, Mouraria, and Graca cluster around the Sao Jorge Castle on the highest hill; the 25 de Abril suspension bridge across the Tagus is so similar to the Golden Gate that it was designed by the same company. Belem, 6 km west of the centre, contains the Torre de Belem, the Jeronimos Monastery, and the original Pasteis de Belem bakery — the source of the custard tarts that the whole country makes its own version of. Fado music is best heard at a small house (casa de fado) in Alfama rather than a tourist restaurant on the main street; the genuine venues are small, personal, and require a reservation. Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) is served from most European cities by TAP Air Portugal, Ryanair, easyJet, and Vueling; TAP in particular runs regular promotional fares to North American and South American connections via Lisbon that can be significantly cheaper than other transatlantic routes. For inbound European flights, October-March is consistently the best value window; July-August adds a 40-60% premium and the city's outdoor dining and viewpoint culture is less enjoyable in extreme heat anyway. Sintra (40 min by train), with its Pena Palace and Moorish castle, is the strongest day trip; the Arrabida Nature Reserve and Setubal peninsula are 45 minutes south by road for beaches.

Where to stay in Lisbon

How the main neighbourhoods compare, based on trip type.

  • AlfamaBest for first visit

The oldest neighbourhood in Lisbon, built on the hillside east of the Baixa, is where most first-time visitors gravitate - and for good reason. The Castelo de Sao Jorge sits at the top, the Museu do Fado is at the river end, and the Portas do Sol viewpoint looks across the terracotta rooftops toward the Tagus. The 28 tram runs through the neighbourhood and is the most pleasant way to arrive from the Baixa. Alfama is noisy in summer evenings when the streets fill with crowds after dark - worth factoring in for light sleepers.

Metro: No metro; Tram 28, 12E · Airport: Around 30-35 min by metro to the city centre · Historic, hilly, atmospheric

  • Chiado / Bairro AltoBest for a weekend

Chiado is central Lisbon's most comfortable commercial and cultural neighbourhood for a 2-3 night stay. The Bertrand bookshop (one of the world's oldest continuously operating bookshops), the Museu do Chiado, and a concentration of good restaurants are all here. Bairro Alto immediately above transforms into the city's main bar neighbourhood after 22:00 - the streets fill with people moving between small bars and continue late into the night. The combination of daytime culture and evening nightlife makes the area around Largo do Chiado one of the most efficient bases in the city.

Metro: Lines Green and Blue (Baixa-Chiado) · Airport: Around 20-25 min by metro · Cultural by day, lively bars by night

  • MourariaBest for remote workers

The neighbourhood between Alfama and Intendente has become one of Lisbon's more interesting areas for longer working stays - a high density of independent cafes, a multicultural resident community, and prices substantially below Chiado or Principe Real. The Intendente square has been regenerated into a pleasant public space with weekend markets. The area is not scenic in the picture-postcard sense but has a genuine neighbourhood character that rewards staying a week rather than passing through.

Metro: Line Green (Intendente, Martim Moniz) · 15 min walk to Baixa-Chiado · Multicultural, independent cafes, local

  • BelemBest with kids

The riverside district west of the city centre has the highest concentration of major monuments in Lisbon - the Torre de Belem, the Padrao dos Descobrimentos, and the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos are all within a 10-minute walk of each other along the riverfront. The open spaces make this significantly more manageable with children than Alfama or Chiado. The original pasteis de Belem pastry shop is here. Note that Belem is 7-8 km from the centre - the 15E tram takes about 30-40 minutes.

Metro: No metro; Tram 15E · 30-40 min tram to Chiado · Monument district, riverside, open spaces

  • Principe RealBest for longer stays

The elevated neighbourhood above Chiado is a comfortable area for a stay of a week or more. The Saturday antiques market, the Jardim do Principe Real garden, and a consistent quality of restaurants and wine bars create a reliable daily rhythm. Prices are higher than Mouraria but the neighbourhood is quieter in the evenings than Bairro Alto while remaining well-connected to everything. The Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga is a 20-minute walk west.

Metro: Line Blue (Rato) · 15 min walk to Baixa-Chiado · Calm, leafy, upscale
