About Dubai

Dubai International Airport (DXB) is the world's busiest airport by international passenger traffic and the home hub for Emirates, with direct connections to over 150 countries. The city itself divides sharply between the historic Creek district — with its gold and spice souks, abra water taxis, and the Al Fahidi heritage neighbourhood — and the modern skyline of Downtown Dubai, anchored by the Burj Khalifa. Dubai Mall, one of the world's largest shopping centres, sits at the base of the Burj Khalifa and connects to the Dubai Fountain, the world's largest choreographed water feature. The desert hinterland offers dune bashing, camel trekking, and overnight camps within 60 minutes of the city. Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) handles some cargo and charter traffic but DXB remains the primary hub for passenger services. Dubai's tax-free status and the strength of the dirham-euro exchange rate make it a particularly competitive long-haul destination for European travellers on retail and dining budgets.

Where to stay in Dubai

How the main neighbourhoods compare, based on trip type.

  • Dubai Marina / JBRBest for first visit

The Marina district with the adjacent Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) waterfront is a visitor-practical base in Dubai for a first trip. The Marina Walk, the JBR beach, and the Ain Dubai Ferris wheel are all walkable. The tram system and Metro Red Line connect from here to Downtown Dubai (about 25 minutes to Burj Khalifa) and to the Mall of the Emirates in the other direction. The beach at JBR is free and well-maintained - though June through September heat makes beach activity impractical before late afternoon.

Metro: Metro Red Line (DMCC, Jumeirah Lake Towers), Dubai Tram · Airport: Around 30-35 min by metro from DXB airport · Marina waterfront, beach, modern towers

  • Downtown DubaiBest for a weekend

The Downtown district is where the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall, and the Dubai Fountain are located. For a 2-3 night visit centred on the major landmarks, staying in Downtown eliminates the transport dependency that affects every other area. The Dubai Mall is both a shopping centre and home to an aquarium, an ice rink, and a VR park - a full day's activity independently of the Burj Khalifa itself. Outside the immediate tourist core, the streets are quieter and more residential.

Metro: Metro Red Line (Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall) · Airport: Around 20-25 min by metro from DXB airport · Iconic landmarks, very convenient, expensive

  • DIFC / Business BayBest for remote workers

The Dubai International Financial Centre and Business Bay together form one of the more functional working districts in Dubai. The DIFC has a high density of restaurants, cafes, and the Gate Village complex which includes contemporary art galleries free to enter. Gate Avenue, the covered pedestrian street running through the financial centre, is one of the more pleasant walking environments in the city for midday breaks. Business Bay has canal-side walking paths along the Dubai Water Canal for evening unwinding.

Metro: Metro Red Line (Business Bay) · 10 min metro to Burj Khalifa · Financial district, cafes, co-working infrastructure

  • Al Fahidi / Al Seef (Old Dubai)Easy airport access

The Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood on the Dubai Creek is the oldest preserved district in the city - wind tower houses, the Dubai Museum, and the Al Fahidi fort date from the late 19th century. The abra (traditional water taxi) crossing across the Creek to Deira takes 5 minutes. The Spice Souk and Gold Souk are on the Deira side. The area is around 10-15 minutes by taxi from DXB airport and has a completely different character from the modern tower districts - worth considering for a single-night transit stay or a visit that prioritises the city's historical context.

Metro: Metro Green Line (Al Fahidi) · Airport: Around 10-15 min by taxi from DXB airport · Historic creek district, authentic, very different from modern Dubai

  • JumeirahBest for longer stays

The low-rise beach suburb stretching south from the old city along the coast is one of Dubai's more comfortable areas for a stay of a week or more. Jumeirah Beach Park and Kite Beach provide the best free beach access in the city, and the walking and cycling path along the coast is one of the few areas in Dubai that is pleasant for outdoor activity at street level. The neighbourhood is entirely residential and very quiet in the evenings - practical for working trips or for visitors who prefer proximity to the water over access to commercial attractions.

Metro: No direct metro; Bus J01, J03 · 25-30 min taxi or ride-share to Downtown · Beach suburb, residential, quiet
