About Prague

Prague's historic centre is one of Europe's most intact — the city was largely spared the bombing of World War II, which left its Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau architecture in a state of preservation unusual for a capital of its size. The Prague Castle complex on Hradcany hill is the largest ancient castle in the world by area, containing St Vitus Cathedral, the Royal Palace, and several galleries within its walls; the view from here across the red-tiled rooftops of Mala Strana and across the Vltava to the Old Town is one of Europe's defining urban panoramas. Charles Bridge, lined with 30 Baroque statues, connects the castle side to the Old Town and the Astronomical Clock in the Old Town Square — the latter draws crowds every hour as its medieval figures emerge for the chiming display. Prague's beer culture is the strongest in the world by consumption per capita; the traditional Czech pub (hospoda) in Zizkov and Vinohrady neighbourhoods is the most authentic experience, away from the tourist-facing Old Town brewpubs. Vaclav Havel Airport (PRG) is Central Europe's fourth-busiest airport with three competing budget carriers — easyJet, Ryanair, and Wizz Air — which keeps inbound fares consistently lower than comparable capital cities with weaker low-cost competition. Booking mid-week rather than Friday-Sunday can save an additional 15-25% given Prague's high weekend short-break demand. May-June and September give the best balance of comfortable weather and manageable visitor numbers; July-August is noticeably more crowded and priced accordingly.

Where to stay in Prague

How the main neighbourhoods compare, based on trip type.

  • Stare Mesto (Old Town)Best for first visit

Staying in the Old Town puts the Astronomical Clock, the Old Town Square, and the Charles Bridge within a 10-15 minute walk of any address. The Jewish Quarter (Josefov) is immediately north and accessible on foot. The density of what is worth seeing in central Prague is high enough that a 3-night stay based here can cover most of the main sights without needing public transport. The Old Town is extremely crowded in summer - managing expectations about July and August crowds is important for a first visit.

Metro: Lines A (Staromestska), B (Namesti Republiky) · Airport: Around 30-40 min by airport express bus to the centre · Historic, crowded in summer, walkable

  • VinohradyBest for remote workers

The residential neighbourhood east of Wenceslas Square is a reliable base for a working stay in Prague. The area has a high density of independent cafes and restaurants on Namesti Miru and surrounding streets, a calmer atmosphere than the tourist centre, and good Metro Line A access. Riegrovy Sady park provides a green space for midday breaks with a beer garden that operates from spring through autumn and has views of the city below. Accommodation prices are noticeably lower than the Old Town while remaining 10-15 minutes by metro from the main sights.

Metro: Line A (Namesti Miru, Jiriho z Podebrad) · 15 min metro to Old Town Square · Residential, cafes, green parks

  • ZizkovBest for nightlife

The neighbourhood east of Vinohrady is one of Prague's most bar-dense districts - the streets around Seifertova and Blanicka are packed with small pubs and bars that stay open late. The Zizkov Television Tower, a brutalist structure with crawling baby sculptures on its exterior, is the neighbourhood's unlikely landmark and worth a visit for the observation deck view. Less polished than the Old Town but significantly more authentic and considerably cheaper for food and drink.

Metro: Lines A, C (Hlavni Nadrazi, then tram) · 20 min tram to Old Town · Gritty, affordable, authentic bar scene

  • Mala Strana (Lesser Town)Best with kids

The neighbourhood below Prague Castle and across the Charles Bridge from the Old Town is quieter, with more residential streets, the Wallenstein Garden, Petrin Hill and funicular railway, and the Kampa island park along the river. Children respond well to the Castle complex (Hradcany) and the changing of the guard. Petrin Hill has a miniature Eiffel Tower and a mirror maze. Mala Strana is also notably quieter at night than Stare Mesto - easier for early bedtimes.

Metro: Line A (Malostranska) · 10 min walk across Charles Bridge to Old Town · Quieter, historic, castle-adjacent

  • SmichovBest for longer stays

The neighbourhood south of Mala Strana along the river has developed significantly in recent years - the area around Andel has a modern infrastructure of supermarkets, gyms, and restaurants that makes longer stays practical. Prices are lower than anywhere in the city centre and the Metro Line B connection is reliable. Not particularly atmospheric but very functional for a week-long working or slow-travel stay, with the river and Petrin Hill accessible for breaks.

Metro: Line B (Andel, Smichovske Nadrazi) · 15 min metro to Old Town · Modern, residential, practical
