Vienna has been ranked the world's most liveable city by the Economist Intelligence Unit for multiple consecutive years, reflecting its combination of cultural richness, public infrastructure, and safety that few other European capitals match. The Ringstrasse boulevard, commissioned by Emperor Franz Joseph in the 1860s, contains the Opera House, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Parliament, and the Burgtheater — a concentration of civic grandeur with no real equivalent in scale outside of Paris. The Kunsthistorisches Museum holds one of the world's great collections of old masters including the largest Bruegel collection anywhere; the Belvedere Palace holds Klimt's The Kiss, arguably Austria's most recognisable painting. Vienna's coffee-house culture — Kaffeehäuser where time moves slowly, newspapers hang on racks, and the waiter brings water with every order — is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage listed separately from the city itself. Vienna International Airport (VIE) is Austria's main hub with Austrian Airlines, Wizz Air, and Ryanair all operating European routes; the Wizz Air base in particular produces competitive prices from Central and Eastern Europe. Vienna's low and high seasons are clear-cut: December (Christmas markets) and July-August are peak pricing windows; March-April and October-November tend to offer the best combination of comfortable weather and lower fares. Bratislava (1 hour by river ferry or bus) makes a natural addition to a Vienna trip — one of the shortest inter-capital distances in the world.
