Tallinn's medieval old town is one of Europe's best-preserved — intact 13th-century limestone walls encircle a network of cobbled streets, merchant houses, and guild buildings that feel genuinely lived-in rather than reconstructed for tourism. Tallinn Airport (TLL) is 4 km from the city centre, one of the shortest airport-to-city distances in Europe. The old town divides into two distinct areas: the upper town (Toompea) with the castle, cathedral, and panoramic viewpoints over the red rooftops; and the lower town with the town hall square, merchant-era architecture, and the Telliskivi creative quarter just outside the walls. Tallinn is also a gateway to Estonia's islands, particularly Saaremaa, and the ferry port connects to Helsinki in 2 hours and Stockholm overnight. The city is well established as a tech hub — Skype and TransferWise were both founded here — which gives it an unusually young, international character for a city of 450,000. Winter here is cold but the Christmas market in the old town square is consistently ranked among Europe's best.
