The area on the south bank of the Liffey between Dame Street and the river is the most central base for a first visit. The location puts the National Gallery, Trinity College (Book of Kells), Dublin Castle, and St Patrick's Cathedral all within a 20-minute walk. The streets around Grafton Street and St Stephen's Green are calmer and more practical during the day. Temple Bar itself is very loud on weekend nights - addresses on the south side of Dame Street facing away from the river are significantly quieter for sleeping.

The neighbourhood northwest of the Liffey has a more authentically Dublin character than the Temple Bar area. Smithfield Square hosts occasional markets and the Jameson Distillery is on the square. Stoneybatter to the northwest has a strong cluster of independent pubs and restaurants that cater more to local residents than tourists. The Luas Red Line from Smithfield to the city centre runs in under 10 minutes, making it practical as a short-stay base.

- Docklands / Grand Canal DockBest for remote workers
The tech and financial district along the south bank of the Liffey east of the city centre is one of the more practical working bases in Dublin. The area has a high density of coffee shops, lunch options, and co-working spaces. The Grand Canal Dock itself is pleasant for walks and has the Bord Gais Energy Theatre for evening performances. Significantly quieter at weekends than the city centre, but well-served by the DART and Luas.

The embassy district south of the city centre has Herbert Park (flat, well-maintained, with a small lake), is adjacent to the RDS Arena, and is near the Aviva Stadium. The area is very residential and calm - no significant nightlife, flat terrain for cycling, and good access to the south Dublin coast via the DART. The National Museum Natural History section is a 20-minute walk or short bus ride north and is free to enter.

The south Dublin suburbs 3-4 km from the city centre are good areas for a longer stay. Both have a high density of independent restaurants, cafes, and pubs that cater to a residential rather than tourist crowd - Ranelagh's main street in particular has some of Dublin's better neighbourhood restaurants. Canal walks connect to the city centre on foot in 30-40 minutes. Accommodation is noticeably better value than the city centre and the residential character provides a calmer base for a week-long stay.
