Prague's historic centre is one of Europe's most intact — the city was largely spared the bombing of World War II, which left its Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau architecture in a state of preservation unusual for a capital of its size. The Prague Castle complex on Hradcany hill is the largest ancient castle in the world by area, containing St Vitus Cathedral, the Royal Palace, and several galleries within its walls; the view from here across the red-tiled rooftops of Mala Strana and across the Vltava to the Old Town is one of Europe's defining urban panoramas. Charles Bridge, lined with 30 Baroque statues, connects the castle side to the Old Town and the Astronomical Clock in the Old Town Square — the latter draws crowds every hour as its medieval figures emerge for the chiming display. Prague's beer culture is the strongest in the world by consumption per capita; the traditional Czech pub (hospoda) in Zizkov and Vinohrady neighbourhoods is the most authentic experience, away from the tourist-facing Old Town brewpubs. Vaclav Havel Airport (PRG) is Central Europe's fourth-busiest airport with three competing budget carriers — easyJet, Ryanair, and Wizz Air — which keeps inbound fares consistently lower than comparable capital cities with weaker low-cost competition. Booking mid-week rather than Friday-Sunday can save an additional 15-25% given Prague's high weekend short-break demand. May-June and September give the best balance of comfortable weather and manageable visitor numbers; July-August is noticeably more crowded and priced accordingly.
