Six airports serve Greater London: Heathrow (LHR) handles most long-haul traffic; Gatwick (LGW) is the main base for easyJet and Norwegian; Stansted (STN) and Luton (LTN) are the budget options, primarily Ryanair and Wizz Air; London City (LCY) serves European business routes. Always compare Stansted and Luton against Gatwick — fares can differ by £40-60 on the same date, and bus connections from both are under £5.   The stretch of the Thames south bank between London Bridge and Waterloo covers more first-visit essentials per square kilometre than anywhere else in London - the Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe, the Shard, Borough Market, and Southwark Cathedral are all within a 20-minute walk of each other. Borough Market is open Thursday through Saturday and is the best food market in London by some distance. The South Bank is also fully walkable from the West End via Waterloo Bridge.

• Kensington / South KensingtonBest with kids

  The museum mile along Exhibition Road is the practical reason to base here with children - the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum are all free and next to each other. Hyde Park is immediately to the north. The neighbourhood is residential and calm compared to central London, and the Tube connections on the Piccadilly line reach Heathrow directly without a transfer.

• Shoreditch / Bethnal GreenBest for nightlife

  East London's main going-out area, centred on Brick Lane, Shoreditch High Street, and the streets around Old Spitalfields Market. Spitalfields Market and Columbia Road Flower Market (Sunday mornings) are the main daytime draws. Further east, Bethnal Green offers marginally lower prices and the same Overground connections.

• Notting Hill / BayswaterBest for a weekend

  Notting Hill works well for a 2-3 night London stay - Portobello Road Market (Saturday), Holland Park, and the photogenic Pembridge Crescent houses give it a different character from central London. Bayswater immediately east offers better value with the same Tube access. The annual Notting Hill Carnival in late August is the neighbourhood at its most intense and requires booking well in advance.

• King's Cross / IslingtonBest for longer stays

  King's Cross has changed considerably since St Pancras International was rebuilt in 2007 - the Granary Square development, Coal Drops Yard, and the area around the canal have made it one of the better-connected and more interesting parts of central London. Islington to the north (Angel) adds independent restaurants and the Screen on the Green cinema. The Elizabeth line, Thameslink, and Eurostar connections all run from St Pancras/King's Cross, making it the most transport-efficient base for longer stays.
