About London

London is Europe's most visited city and one of the world's great metropolises — a place where the British Museum, the National Gallery, the Tate Modern, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Natural History Museum are all free to enter, making it one of the strongest cultural value propositions of any major world city. The city divides naturally across the Thames: the north bank runs from the financial City of London past St Paul's Cathedral and the West End theatre district to Kensington's museum mile; the south bank covers the Tate Modern, Borough Market, and the Shard. Each of London's neighbourhoods has its own identity — Notting Hill's Portobello Road market, Shoreditch's street art and independent restaurants, Greenwich's maritime heritage and Royal Observatory, and Camden's covered market all feel like separate small cities. The Tube connects central London efficiently; Oyster card or contactless payment is the standard method. Six airports serve Greater London: Heathrow (LHR) handles most long-haul traffic; Gatwick (LGW) is the main base for easyJet and Norwegian; Stansted (STN) and Luton (LTN) are the budget options, primarily Ryanair and Wizz Air; London City (LCY) serves European business routes. Always compare Stansted and Luton against Gatwick — fares can differ by £40-60 on the same date, and bus connections from both are under £5. Inbound fares to London are consistently highest over UK bank holidays and in late July-August; November through February is when prices tend to be sharpest from most European origin cities.

Where to stay in London

How the main neighbourhoods compare, based on trip type.

• South Bank / BoroughBest for first visit

The stretch of the Thames south bank between London Bridge and Waterloo packs a high concentration of first-visit essentials into a walkable area - the Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe, the Shard, Borough Market, and Southwark Cathedral are all within a 20-minute walk of each other. Borough Market is open Thursday through Saturday and is one of the best food markets in London. The South Bank is also fully walkable from the West End via Waterloo Bridge.

Metro: London Bridge (Jubilee, Northern), Southwark (Jubilee) · Airport: Around 30 min from Gatwick via Thameslink; around 50 min from Heathrow via Tube · Busy, cultural, riverside

• Kensington / South KensingtonBest with kids

The museum mile along Exhibition Road is the practical reason to base here with children - the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum are all free and next to each other. Hyde Park is immediately to the north. The neighbourhood is residential and calm compared to central London, and the Tube connections on the Piccadilly line reach Heathrow directly without a transfer.

Metro: South Kensington (Circle, District, Piccadilly) · Airport: Around 50 min direct from Heathrow on the Piccadilly line · Quiet, affluent, museum district
