About Rome
Rome is one of the world's most historically dense cities — the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, and Vatican City are all within 5 km of each other, making the historic centre navigable on foot in a way few other capitals are. Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel are among the most visited sites on earth; booking timed entry weeks in advance is essential during any school holiday period. Beyond the main circuit, the Trastevere neighbourhood is where local Romans eat in the evening — medieval alleyways, vine-covered facades, and restaurants where the menu is written on a blackboard rather than laminated. The Borghese Gallery holds one of Italy's finest Bernini and Caravaggio collections in a park setting, and requires advance reservation. Rome has two airports: Fiumicino (FCO), the main international hub 30 km southwest, connected by the Leonardo Express train in 32 minutes; and Ciampino (CIA), the Ryanair and easyJet airport 15 km southeast, connected by bus. Ciampino flights are often noticeably cheaper than Fiumicino on the same travel date — worth checking both. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) give the best conditions; July-August brings intense heat and crowds that make the open-air sites genuinely exhausting.
