El Dorado International Airport (BOG) handles more aircraft movements than any other airport in Latin America and serves as Colombia's main international gateway, with Avianca and LATAM operating the backbone of routes alongside low-cost carriers JetSmart and Wingo. Regional South American connections - Medellin, Cartagena, Cali, Lima, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo - run at high frequency; transatlantic services to Madrid, London, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt serve both business and Colombian diaspora markets. Bogota sits at 2,600 metres above sea level, worth noting for arrival planning - most visitors adjust within 24 hours. The city works well as a base for a few days before or after a wider Colombia itinerary: La Candelaria's colonial centre, the Botero Museum, and the Monserrate cable car cover a full day, while domestic connections from BOG to Cartagena, the Coffee Region, and Medellin are frequent and inexpensive. Prices from Europe to Bogota tend to be lowest in late January through March and in September, outside Colombian school holiday periods.
